Head of Projects (Civil Engineering)
Job Description:
Our client, a reputable and growing construction and engineering company based in Arusha, is seeking to recruit a highly experienced and results-driven Head of Projects (Civil Engineering) to oversee and manage multiple construction projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for end-to-end project delivery, including planning, execution, cost control, quality assurance, contractor coordination, and overall site management. This role requires a strong civil engineering background combined with proven project management expertise to ensure successful delivery of construction works within scope, budget, timeline, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution
- Lead and oversee multiple ongoing construction projects from initiation to completion.
- Ensure projects are delivered within approved budgets, timelines, and quality standards.
- Develop and monitor project plans, schedules, and execution strategies.
- Coordinate all site activities including contractors, consultants, suppliers, and internal teams.
- Identify project risks, delays, and bottlenecks and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure smooth execution of all construction activities across multiple sites.
Engineering & Technical Oversight
- Review and interpret engineering drawings, BOQs, specifications, and construction plans.
- Ensure all construction works comply with approved engineering standards and project specifications.
- Supervise structural, civil, and finishing works on site.
- Ensure correct construction methodologies, materials usage, and execution techniques.
- Monitor technical compliance, workmanship quality, and engineering integrity of works.
Cost Control & Budget Management
- Monitor and control project budgets, expenditures, and cost variations.
- Track material usage, labour productivity, and equipment utilization.
- Verify contractor claims, measurements, and progress payments.
- Minimize material wastage and unnecessary project costs.
- Prepare detailed cost analysis and project financial performance reports.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure all construction works meet required quality standards and specifications.
- Conduct regular site inspections and quality audits.
- Enforce compliance with approved drawings, engineering standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor safety, workmanship, and construction quality across all sites.
- Maintain proper project documentation and compliance records.
Contractor & Team Management
- Manage and coordinate site engineers, supervisors, foremen, and subcontractors.
- Monitor contractor performance, productivity, and adherence to project requirements.
- Ensure clear communication between all project stakeholders.
- Maintain discipline, professionalism, and efficiency across all project sites.
- Resolve operational and site-level conflicts where necessary.
Reporting & Strategic Planning
- Prepare weekly and monthly project progress reports for management.
- Report on project performance, risks, delays, and cost variations.
- Support management in strategic planning and project execution decisions.
- Provide technical and operational insights to improve project delivery efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Registration with ERB as a Graduate Engineer or Professional Engineer is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in construction project management.
- Strong experience in building, civil, industrial, or commercial construction projects.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, structural works, and site execution processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, BOQs, and technical documents.
- Experience managing contractors, consultants, and site teams.
- Proficiency in MS Office, MS Project, AutoCAD, or related construction software.
- Valid driving license is required.
